Creating a legacy: A Tech Startup Journey with Alhena

In this episode of Tech Startup Stories, Natalie Binns speaks with Ashu Dubey, founder and CEO of Alhena, about the realities of building an AI company in one of the most crowded and fast-moving categories in technology today. A Founder Journey Shaped by Movement

Ashu’s path into entrepreneurship spans multiple countries and experiences, beginning in India, moving through Australia, and eventually landing in the United States. While his time at companies like LinkedIn provided valuable experience in growth and experimentation, the underlying motivation to build never went away.

There was always a sense of unfinished work. A desire not just to participate in building products, but to create something enduring. That ambition, shaped early on by the influence of founders who built generational companies, ultimately led him back into the startup world .

The Reality of Starting Again

Before Alhena, Ashu had already experienced the highs and challenges of building a company. His first venture achieved strong user engagement and scale, but struggled to convert that traction into revenue.

That experience shaped his approach the second time around.

This time, the focus is not only on creating value, but also on capturing it. Building a product that customers are willing to pay for, early and consistently, is treated as a core part of the strategy rather than something to address later.

It is a shift that reflects a deeper understanding of what sustainable growth requires.

A Journey Defined by Pivots

Like many startups, Alhena did not begin with its current focus.

The initial idea centred on supporting online communities, particularly within crypto, by helping users get accurate answers in fast-moving environments. While the solution worked, the market itself was limited.

Brands facing similar challenges around accuracy, trust, and customer interaction began to adopt the product. Over time, this led to a broader realisation. The opportunity was not just in reducing support costs, but in driving revenue. This shift from defence to offence became a defining moment for the company.

Building in a Crowded Market

One of the biggest challenges Ashu highlights is the level of noise in the AI ecosystem.

With countless companies claiming similar capabilities, differentiation becomes difficult, both for founders and for customers trying to evaluate solutions. Early on, this made it harder to communicate what made Alhena different.

Over time, that has begun to change, customers are becoming more informed, more selective, and more aware of the gaps between promise and reality. This shift is creating space for companies that can demonstrate real outcomes, rather than just potential.

A Platform Approach to Solving Real Problems

Alhena’s approach is rooted in consolidation, the platform brings together multiple capabilities into one system. From product discovery and conversational search to post-purchase support, it aims to replace the need for several disconnected tools.

The focus is not on adding features for the sake of it, but on solving the full journey of the customer interaction in a way that is cohesive and scalable. At the same time, there is a strong emphasis on usability.

By reducing the need for engineering involvement and enabling no-code implementation, the platform allows businesses to move faster and adopt new capabilities without added friction.

Looking Ahead

The long-term vision for Alhena reflects a broader shift in how businesses may operate.

As AI continues to evolve, Ashu sees a future where individual entrepreneurs can build and scale highly successful online businesses with significantly fewer resources. The goal is for Alhena to enable that level of leverage.

In the shorter term, the focus is clear. Execution, growth, and working closely with leading brands that are actively seeking solutions in this space.

A Journey Still in Motion

What stands out in this conversation is the balance between ambition and realism.

There is a clear vision of what the future could look like, but also an understanding that getting there requires consistent execution, continuous learning, and the ability to adapt.

Alhena is still evolving, but it is built on a strong foundation. A clear problem, a refined approach, and a focus on delivering real value in a space that is still taking shape.
