Making an Impact: A Tech Startup Journey with Aneemo

From clinical psychology to entrepreneurship, Dr Emma Williamson shares the story behind Aneemo with Natalie Binns in Season 4 Episode 5 of Tech Startup Stories. Emma never set out to become a founder. After 20 years working in the NHS as a consultant clinical psychologist, she had already been innovating within healthcare, developing evidence-based approaches to trauma-informed care and building the largest homeless psychology service in Europe. But as demand grew for the knowledge and training she had developed, she began to see an opportunity to make that expertise available at a much larger scale.

From Clinical Practice to a Scalable Solution

Aneemo was born from a problem Emma had experienced first-hand. Services were dealing with increasingly complex needs, while staff were stretched, overwhelmed and often lacked the tools required to provide the best possible care.

Rather than keeping that knowledge within her own clinical services, Emma wanted to democratise access to evidence-based practice. With support from an edtech developer and backing from the Mayor of London, she created Aneemo's first MVP, a rough sleeping mental health awareness training programme, while still working full-time in the NHS.

What started with a £25,000 innovation grant has since grown considerably. The first module has trained 12,000 people across 39 countries, while partnerships with government organisations and early customers helped demonstrate that there was a genuine demand for the wider platform.

Letting Customers Drive the Growth

One of the defining parts of Emma's journey has been building Aneemo around a real and clearly understood need rather than trying to create technology first and find a market afterwards.

An early customer wanted to purchase the training library before Emma had even finished building it, giving the business an important signal that the solution was addressing a genuine problem. That early demand helped Aneemo remain bootstrapped and profitable, with customers effectively helping to shape the direction and growth of the business.

Emma describes the experience as laying the tracks while driving, learning what is needed and building the business at the same time.

Building Tech Without a Tech Background

Emma's expertise is clinical rather than technical, but that has not stopped her from building a technology-led company. Instead, she has focused on bringing together the right partners and developing the technology as the customer need has become clearer.

Aneemo has evolved from its original training platform towards AI-driven learning, immersive XR experiences and technology that can work across existing healthcare systems. Emma has also brought technical expertise into the team, including CTO Dr Marko Krasnitz, while continuing to lead on the clinical content and evidence base that underpin the product.

Building for Impact at Scale

For Emma, the ambition is about much more than building a successful technology company. Over the next five years, Aneemo aims to train one million frontline staff in areas including homelessness and complex mental health, with plans to expand internationally and build on its growing presence in Australia and demand from North America.

The company already works with around 160 local authorities and 50 NHS trusts, while its roadmap includes further expansion into areas such as elder care.

For Emma, the founder journey has ultimately been driven by the same mission that shaped her clinical career: finding a problem that needs solving, using the expertise she already has, and finding a way to make that knowledge reach far more people.

Her advice to other founders reflects that experience. Rather than becoming a founder simply because you want to build a startup, she believes you need to be the right person with the right idea, grounded in genuine expertise and a problem you feel compelled to solve.
