A Non-Linear Path to Founding
Polina’s journey begins far from the world of startups. Originally pursuing architecture, she moved to the UK at a young age with a clear vision of building an architecture practice. At the same time, she held an early fascination with advertising, drawn to how strong brands could be recognised instantly.
However, external circumstances shifted that path. Global events, including COVID and the war, disrupted both personal and professional plans, forcing a difficult decision to step away from a traditional academic route and move directly into work .
What followed was a period of exploration across disciplines. From coding and product design to branding and creative direction, Polina experimented widely, building a diverse skill set that would later shape her approach as a founder.
Rather than being unfocused, this phase was intentional. It was about understanding where creativity could be applied most effectively.
Redefining Creativity and Technical Thinking
A key insight from the conversation is the idea that creativity and technical ability are not opposing forces.
Polina describes creativity as a form of problem solving, something that exists across disciplines rather than within a single role. Whether working in mathematics, coding, or design, the underlying process remains the same: understanding a problem and finding a better way to approach it.
This perspective becomes central to how First Concepts is built. It reflects a belief that the most effective products are created when creative and analytical thinking are combined, rather than separated.
From Low Point to Breakthrough
Like many founder journeys, there is a defining turning point.
After leaving a previous venture, Polina found herself at a low moment, facing financial pressure and uncertainty about what to do next. It was a period marked by doubt and exhaustion, something rarely visible from the outside.
What changed was a sudden shift in opportunity. An invitation to join Antler introduced her to a new environment, one focused on building, learning, and collaboration. Within a short space of time, she met her co-founders and began working on what would become First Concepts.
The contrast between those two moments highlights a reality of startup life. Progress is often unpredictable, with significant changes happening in a matter of days.
The Impact of the Right Team
One of the most defining aspects of building First Concepts has been the founding team.
Polina describes the experience of working with the right people as transformational. The pace of execution increased significantly, with ideas moving faster and decisions becoming clearer. What might have taken weeks individually could be achieved in days as a team.
This alignment goes beyond skills. It is about shared energy, commitment, and a collective understanding of the problem being solved.
Culture, Ownership, and Building Lean
As the company grows, culture plays a significant role in how the team operates.
First Concepts is intentionally built as a lean organisation, with a strong emphasis on ownership and collaboration. Team members are encouraged to take responsibility for their work while contributing across different areas, creating a flexible but accountable environment.
There is also a focus on being direct while remaining supportive, fostering a culture where feedback is clear and progress is continuous.
A Journey Still Evolving
What makes this conversation compelling is its honesty.
There is no simplified narrative or overnight success story. Instead, it reflects the reality of building something from the ground up. There are moments of uncertainty, periods of rapid progress, and a constant need to adapt.
First Concepts is still evolving, but it is built on a clear foundation: a deep understanding of creativity, a strong team, and a commitment to building something meaningful.
